Alternate Ways To Earn Credits
Credits Through the Independent Learning Centre (ILC)
A student can earn credits through the Independent Learning Centre by a method known as correspondence. Correspondence learning involves independent study and completion of material by a student via the mail. When the course of study is complete, the student arranges with ILC to write a final exam at a specific location. Correspondence learning is essentially for students who are unable to enrol in that course in regular high school day or night programmes. Registration must be processed through the Guidance department at Richmond Green SS . These courses can be completed at any time throughout the year.
The criteria as outlined by the York Region District School Board are:
- The student must be 16 years or older
- If the course is available in the student's day school, he/she must take the course there.
- If the course is available at night or virtual school, he/she must take the course there.
- ILC courses are available to students who are on HOME STUDY due to illness and are unable to attend the regular day school.
- A student may take an ILC course if he/she is within 2 credits of graduation and needs a particular course to graduate, which he/she cannot fit into his/her schedule.

Night School Credits
Each semester, the York Region District School Board offers a limited number of courses at some of the secondary schools during the evening. These courses start and end within the semester. They run 2 nights per week; either on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, depending on the location. All classes run from 6:30 to 9:45 p.m. Usually these courses are limited to grades 11 and 12, with a few adult literacy options at the 9 to 12 level.
Please see your Guidance Counsellor for registration information.
Summer School Credits
The York Region District School Board offers limited courses during the day in July. Students usually attend summer school for one of four reasons:
- to take a new course (acceleration)
- to repeat a course in which they earned a final mark below 35% (acceleration)
- to repeat a course in which they did earn a credit with a grade above 50% in an attempt to earn a higher mark (acceleration)
- to repeat a course in which they earned a final mark of at least 35% but lower than 50% (reinforcement)
Acceleration courses are scheduled for four weeks during the month of July. Reinforcement courses are scheduled for 2 week periods during the month of July. It is possible to sign up for only one acceleration course with necessary prerequisites, but a student may sign up for either one or two reinforcement courses if she/he meets the criteria listed above.
Please see your guidance counsellor for further information.
Virtual School Credits
Students can also complete courses online via the internet through the York Region District School Board. These courses have specific start and end dates within the semester. There are deadlines for registration for each semester, as well as a limited enrolment. A midterm and final exam will be written for each virtual course at Richmond Green Secondary School on a specific date/time. Registration is completed online at: www.virtualschooling.yrdsb.edu.on.ca . It is necessary that you print off the registration instruction sheet to help you successfully register. Registration must be processed through the Richmond Green SS Guidance office.
